Is God a Celestial Dictator?

Is God a Celestial Dictator? Christopher Hitchens thinks so. And a lot of Atheists on the internet repeat this accusation in one form or another. So I’m going to show that God is the exact opposite of a dictator.

It is true that God is our King, and he rules over the creation, but he does not do so in an unkind or unloving way, as suggested by the term “dictator.” God explains his attitude and behavior towards us in Isaiah 57:11, “And of whom have you been afraid, or feared, That you have lied And not remembered Me, Nor taken it to your heart? Is it not because I have held My peace from of old That you do not fear Me?”

Here God points out that while there is the threat of everlasting Hell for those who refuse to believe in Jesus, God is not overbearing towards us. He gives us space to live and make our own decisions, uncoerced by the threat of Hell. If we wish, we can ignore the punishment God has decreed for those who reject him. We can choose to live our lives as if God does not exist.

By God showing such great respect for our free will, he demonstrates that it is not his intention to threaten us into loving him. God is a Celestial King, not a dictator.
